Course Overview:

This 3-hour interactive training prepares therapists, case managers, and peer providers to effectively identify, understand, and address treatment-interfering behaviors - often experienced as “resistance”- using a compassionate, evidence-informed, and relational approach. Participants will explore the phases of treatment, develop a model for understanding resistance through the lens of radical compassion, and practice strategies for catching and navigating resistance without escalating dysregulation or rupturing rapport. The training emphasizes attunement, curiosity, paradox, and the use of both clinician and client emotions as data to guide treatment. Through discussion, case examples, and guided exercises, participants will leave with practical tools to strengthen alliance, increase engagement, and improve treatment outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Define treatment-interfering behaviors and explain why they occur and how they function in the therapeutic process.
  • Describe allianceprocess, and outcome resistance and differentiate between them.
  • Explain the role of dysregulation, felt safety, and hope (goals, willpower, waypower) in treatment engagement.
  • Apply radical compassion as a foundational stance when working with resistance.
  • Utilize paradoxical interventions and value-based questioning to navigate stalled treatment.
  • Strengthen confidence in addressing resistance early to enhance treatment fidelity and client outcomes.
